The news is that there is no news. No progress at all on the establishment of the Dahlonega Plateau AVA. Expected announcements in June never happened, and subsequent hopes for a September declaration also seem doomed.
The rumors I have heard are that the US Treasury (which controls the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, administrators of the AVA rules) has simply put a block on any rule reviews, with no indication of when this might change. The two-weekly newsletter from the TTB is looking distinctly thin these days!
Dahlonega Plateau AVA is not the only pending AVA caught in this bureaucratic roadblock. California’s Pentaluma Gap and Cape May Peninsula AVA in New Jersey are also in limbo. The road to establishing an AVA has become even more tortuous than the TTB diagram issued in February 2017 suggests!
